what is psychiatry ?

Psychiatry is a branch of medicine that concerns the diagnosis and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders.  Psychiatrists use a wide variety of treatment strategies to combat many different psychological disorders.  Psychiatry may involve physiological or psychological treatment, or a combination of the two.  Physiological treatment generally involves the use of medications influencing neurotransmitter functions in the brain.  Psychiatrists are licensed physicians, specially trained to treat patients with menal disorders and to prescribe medications.

Dr. Jeff Hedge, DO

Dr. Hedge has been in private practice in Spokane for many years and is Board Certified in Adult Psychiatry. He was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating from the University of Illinois with a degree in biology, he entered the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine where he earned his Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) in 1983. He served his internship at The Chicago Osteopathic Medical Center. He then served four years in the US Air Force as a flight surgeon in North Carolina, practicing family medicine.

Only fully licensed physicians who have graduated with a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) or a Doctor of Medicine (MD) can specialize in any field of medicine, including psychiatry. Dr. Hedge chose osteopathic training because of its holistic philosophy, focusing on the whole person. He completed his psychiatric residency at Chicago Medical School in 1991. After moving to Spokane, he worked at Spokane Mental Health Center for six years before entering private practice. His psychiatric repertoire includes general adult psychiatry, anxiety and mood disorders, attention deficit disorders and eco-psychology.

Dr. William Brown, MD

Dr. William (Bill) Brown has been practicing adult psychiatry since 1995. He was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. A graduate of Reed College, he went on to attend Oregon Health Science University, graduating from medical school with his MD in 1991. He completed his residency in psychiatry, also at OSHU, where he served as Chief Resident in 1995.

Dr. Brown started his career treating severe and persistent mental disorders (schizophrenia, bipolar disorders and treatment resistant major depressive disorder) at the State Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Since moving to Spokane in 2004, he has worked at the Spokane VA; in both the inpatient and outpatient clinics (PTSD, depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, through 2014); in private practice at Spokane Psychiatry Clinic (all disorders, 2014-2015); and currently has his own private practice, William L. Brown, MD, PLLC, here at Inland Psychiatry and Psychology, Inc. since the beginning of 2016.

Dr. Brown’s views medications as but one of the many tools that are options for patients to use in their recovery. His perspective that it is just as important to point people away from medications (where these could be harmful) as it is to point people towards the right medication (where these might be helpful). Since medications are just one of many treatment options, Dr. Brown provides education (and referral, as needed) to alternative biologic, psychological, spiritual, and social treatment tools, in addition to medications.
